Escape from L.A. (movie)

Starring Kurt Russel, this near-future film gives a strange twist and several harsh mockings of what America would be like if certain events transpired. L.A. is struck by the "Big One" that everyone feared and it becomes an island. The constitution is amended and the president, who bares remarkable resemblance to the late President Ronald Reagan (no doubt an intentional similarity), is sworn in for a life term. One of his first acts is to abandon L.A. as no longer a part of the United States of America. L.A. Island becomes a deportation center for America's "moral criminals." The whole concept of "moral criminals" is an obvious bash against conservatives. These are people who violate what we would call conservative values but are supposedly forced into law by this extremist president. It becomes a federal crime to smoke, drink, use foul language, be any of the unapproved religions (Muslim is mentioned as one of these), and several other things. While most conservatives would agree that such behaviors are wrong and inexcusable, true conservatives would not stand to allow such behaviors to become federal crimes, punishable by deportation or electric chair (there is another attack against conservatives). The movie portrays this ultra-conservative-extremist president as a coward who runs from threats, hides under tables, and screams of prayer. While at the same time, he's a menacing man who seeks total destruction of opposition—including the execution of his own daughter even after she begs forgiveness. L.A. Island is certainly no paradise. Immorality and violence are throughout. All inhabitants are turned into avid killers. Another mock on religion (any religion, not just Christianity) is that a group of island-newcomers are seen praying for God's protection. A lady tells Russel that they are separationists but will soon learn to fit. Moments later, they are all killed by one of many island gangs. Another statement that prayer is useless. The Federal Police are the president's force against his citizens, which use inhumane and deceptive tactics against their own people. There is really only one "good guy" and she is only in the movie for a couple scenes. There's a corrupt dictator as president, an evil terrorist, a vicious police force, and the main character is no good guy himself. The movie ends with Russel's character attempt to save the president's daughter and then activates the president's secret weapon on the entire world, shutting down all electronics from EMP rays by satellite. This supposedly knocks the entire world back to the "stone age." The movie has no redeeming factors. We skipped through many sections in attempts to still find a decent action movie, but to no avail. Don't get this movie. Terrible morals, hard hits on conservative America, anti-Christian undertones, and in general, a bad film. If you want an action movie with terrorists, I can recommend better films, where good triumphs over evil, as it always does. Coming next: Luther
