I was photographer at a conference in late July. On Saturday evening, I began to feel strange back pain that soon spread to my chest. A few minutes later, breathing became painful and difficult. A visit to the local emergency room revealed my condition—my left lung collapsed 50%; a condition known as pneumothorax.
Within a short time, I was transferred via ambulance to a larger hospital that would have the equipment to perform the necessary procedure to reinflate my lung. A couple hours later, I was the victim of an operation involving sticking a tube that looked the size of a garden hose into my chest to drain the fluid and air in the lung cavity.
Each doctor I met received my same question, but each doctor replied with the same answer. No, pneumothorax is not stress-related. In fact, there is no known cause but rather it’s a “twilight zone syndrome
